Equipment
Method
- 9 grams Castor Oil, 7 grams Jojoba Oil, 5 grams Ecosilk, 3 grams Calendula Oil, 0.25 grams Vitamin E Oil, 0.1 grams Bisabolol, 0.1 grams Orange Essential OilThis is a super easy recipe. Simply add all of the ingredients in order of appearance.

- Stir the oils together until you are happy that they are fully blended.

- 2 Glass Roller BottleUse a small funnel or pipette to transfer the oil to a glass roller bottle or lip gloss type tube.

Notes
- Apply as needed to keep lips hydrated, comfortable, and in great condition.
- The smaller ingredients, such as bisabolol and essential oil, are used at very low amounts, so accuracy matters. For the other oils it’s perfectly fine to change them up slightly, as small variations won’t noticeably affect the final product.
- The feel of the lip oil can be adjusted quite easily. Increasing the castor oil will give a glossier, slightly thicker finish, while increasing EcoSilk or jojoba will create a lighter, less oily feel.

Castor Bean Oil
This will usually be the base of most natural lip oils. Castor oil is used in lip products because it provides a natural gloss, adds thickness, and helps the product stay on the lips longer, giving that smooth, cushiony feel rather than absorbing too quickly like lighter oils
Jojoba Oil
Golden jojoba oil is great because it’s very similar to the skin’s natural oils, so it feels comfortable, absorbs nicely, and helps soften and protect the lips. Another reason we chose it was to help balance some of the heavier oils we have used such as the castor oil.
Calendula Infused Oil
Calendula infused oil is basically calendula flowers infused within an oil. Sunflower oil is the most common however we have seen it infused in olive oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil. As it’s the benefits within the flowers we are looking for, all are good to use in our lip oil.
Infused calendulas are beneficial in lip oil because they help soothe, calm, and support healing, making it especially good for dry, sensitive, or chapped lips while adding a gentle, natural care element to our formula.
Eco silk (Isoamyl Laurate)
EcoSilk is a lightweight, plant derived emollient made by combining a fatty acid from coconut oil with an alcohol derived from sugar beet or corn. It’s designed to act as a natural alternative to silicones, giving products that smooth, silky glide without feeling heavy or greasy.
In our lip oil, it helps the formula feel less sticky, giving a soft, and more refined finish, rather than oily, while also improving spreadability so the oil glides easily across the lips.
Vitamin E
We always add vitamin E to our oil based products to help keep them fresh, as it acts as an antioxidant and slows down the oxidation of the oils. This helps extend the shelf life of the product and maintain its quality, while also offering healing and conditioning benefit for the lips.
Bisabolol
We’ve included bisabolol for its excellent soothing properties. While our lip oil is designed to be a great all rounder, adding bisabolol helps provide extra comfort and protection, especially for those prone to dry or sensitive lips, giving the formula more of a gentle, treatment-style feel.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil
This is added purely for aroma. We often change the scent depending on the season or simply what we have to hand, making it an easy way to customise the lip oil without affecting how it performs.
Haven’t or can’t get all the ingredients?
Let’s have a look at what you could substitute.
- Castor Bean Oil, to be honest nothing beats the glossy slip of castor bean oil. However if you must replace it, I would go for High Oleic Sunflower Oil or Meadowfoam Seed Oil.
- Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond or Camellia Oil
- Eco silk (Isoamyl Laurate) Olive Squalane would be a great substitution. Coco-Caprylate/Caprate is another good alternative.
- Calendula Infused Oil, oat oil would be nice or just sunflower oil
- Vitamin E, unless you are making a super small batch that’s going to be used within the month, I would always keep this in.
- Bisabolol, you could leave this out or use a oil soluble chamomile extract
- Sweet Orange Essential Oil, any lip safe essential oil, such as Lavender, peppermint or chamomile. You could also use a lip safe flavour but these tend not to be natural
Final Thoughts
This easy lip oil recipe is one of those simple little products that feels surprisingly luxurious once you start using it.
The castor oil gives you a lovely glossy finish, while the lighter oils and EcoSilk help keep the texture soft, smooth and comfortable on the lips. Added ingredients like calendula and bisabolol help give the formula a more soothing, treatment style feel, especially for dry or sensitive lips.
It’s also incredibly easy to customize. You can adjust the glossiness, swap oils depending on what you have available, or change the scent throughout the year to create your own unique blends.
