Homemade Hot Chocolate
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
  • 1 oz (30g) cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cream

Mix the cocoa powder, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Stir in the boiling water and heat slowly as you stir. It should boil fairly quickly, so be sure to continue stirring so the chocolate doesn't scorch on the bottom of the pan. Slowly stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until the milk gets hot, but don't allow it to boil.

Remove your hot chocolate from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour into 4 mugs and add cream to each mug to serve. Grate some milk chocolate over the top. Serve with homemade marshmallows and enjoy.

Creamy Hot Chocolate

This creamy homemade hot chocolate recipe is sweet and rich and is ideal for a treat at any time of the year.

Ingredients
  • 1 tin sweetened condensed milk (14oz or 400ml)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • 6 1/2 cups water
  • Whipped cream to serve
  • Grated chocolate

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt. Heat the ingredients over a medium-low heat. Don't allow the chocolate to boil. Stir in one cup of water at a time, blending well before adding another cup. Simmer the chocolate until it's warmed through, then remove from the heat and ladle into mugs.

Top with a little whipped cream and grate some chocolate over the cream. Serve with homemade marshmallows.

Rich Dark Hot Chocolate

Ingredients
  • 5oz or 140g dark bitter-sweet chocolate
  • 1 cup hot milk

Pour a little of the milk into a saucepan. Break up the chocolate into small pieces and place into the milk. Heat over a low heat and stir occasionally until the chocolate begins to melt. When the chocolate has softened a little, remove the pan from the heat and stir until the chocolate and the milk form a smooth paste.

Return to a low heat. Add a little more milk to dilute the mixture and stir well. Slowly stir in the rest of the milk. Don't allow the milk to boil.

Pour into a mug and enjoy your rich, dark hot chocolate.

Hot White Chocolate

Here's a decadent twist on an old traditional hot chocolate - using white chocolate!

Ingredients
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 12oz (340g) white chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Finely chop the white chocolate and place the pieces into a heat-safe bowl. Keep a little aside as a garnish for serving.

In a saucepan, heat cream and milk over a medium-low heat until it's hot. Don't allow it to boil. Pour the milk mixture slowly over the white chocolate pieces and stir until the chocolate melts. Add vanilla extract and whisk the mixture until it becomes foamy.

Pour into mugs, sprinkle a little of the chopped white chocolate over the top and serve with raspberry marshmallows for a truly decadent treat!
