Or consider the versatility of wonderful materials found in your home, take cardboard for example. There are literally millions of things that you can make from cardboard!

A hula girl, a giant playing card, a mad hatter, a living car, tin man, a giant computer, or a television set. All you have to do is think of something and use your imagination.

Most costumes that are created from cardboard usually combine a pair of scissors, some spray paint, costume make-up, and super glue. After you have all of these materials, allow your imagination to run free!

The Christmas Present Costume Idea

What you will need:

  • Several long pieces of cardboard (you be the judge) to fit the width and length of your body from one end to the other.
  • A pencil
  • A pair of scissors
  • A large ribbon of your preferred color
  • A pair of stockings of your preferred color
  • A few cans of spray paint (various colors)
  • A small tube of glue

What You Will Need To Do:

  1. Measure the length and width of the boxes to fit your body (you may also measure it to go down to your knees if that is more comfortable).

  2. Put the box together so that it will fit you. Cut a hole in the top for your head to poke through.

  3. Cut holes in the sides for each of your arms to fit through, as well as two more holes for your legs.

  4. Make sure that there is a cut across the bottom of the box so that you will be able to slide it over your head when you put it on.

  5. Take the already-made box outside and draw whatever Christmas designs on it that you like, and spray paint the box with your favorite festive colors.

  6. Let dry for a few hours before wearing.

  7. Get your giant ribbon and glue onto the dried box. You may glue it wherever you would like, and you can tie it loosely around your neck to wear.

  8. Once everything is dry, you may put on your costume.

  9. Last, put on your make-up however you may like. You are now officially a human Christmas present!

Doesn't that sound like an easy homemade costume? As you can see, there are many things that can be done with cardboard. Making a homemade costume is fun and it brings out the creative side in everyone.

*Remember to submit your own homemade things...

Cardboard isn't the only versatile material for your homemade costume ideas. You can make great use of the clothes that you never wear.

Everyone has that old pair of sweats that is just sitting there lying dormant inside of their closet, most likely just collecting dust, never to be worn again.

Perhaps you might have some artificial flowers lying around your house somewhere, also collecting dust. Do not let these potential homemade costumes go to waste. Here is another great homemade costume idea:

The Human Flower

What You Will Need:

  • 6 medium bouquets of various artificial flowers of your choice.
  • An old sweat suit
  • A small tube of glue
  • A pair of scissors

What You Will Need To Do:

  1. Take your 6 bouquets and pull or cut off each of the petals. This can be a tedious process, but it is worth in the end. This makes a very pretty costume. You may have to use more or less petals, depending on how tall you are and how many petals you prefer on your costume.

  2. Once all of your petals are pealed or cut from the artificial stems, glue them to the sweat suit. It usually turns out the best when placing the petals in a pattern or unique design.

  3. You may also choose to put on some costume make up to complete the look, although this is not a requirement.

  4. Let petals dry.

  5. Put on your costume and enjoy!

There are so many materials that are just lying around that we could all be using everyday to make creative and unique homemade costume ideas. All you have to do is use your imagination and let it take you wherever it may.
