The great thing about using a diy oil cleanser is that you can help your skin by not stripping away all natural oils! I was a big fan of the natural oil cleansing method (OCM) which involves just using oils to cleanse and I found that it worked very well.
Moving on from that method I recently found that adding an emulsifier creates a little foam which helps rinse the cleanser off better.
Why Use This DIY Oil Cleanser
- These days many of wash our faces with harsh drying over the counter cleansers. Unfortunately while ridding our faces of dirt, grime and yesterdays makeup we are also wiping away our skins much needed natural oils. The skin does have a built-in function that works hard to replace those oils, but the knock-on effect is it often overcompensates and produces too much oil leading to oily problem skin.
- A common misconception is that oil causes acne. Definitely not true… Oil is not the main contributing factor, hormones, prolonged clogging of the pores, dirt, trapped bacteria and dead skin cells are the main things to watch out for, in reality oil is good for your skin
- It’s a well know fact that oils can be used to clean oils. This is commonly known as the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM), Oils can actively dissolve the dirty impure oils that have hardened on your face and got stuck in your pores.
- I’m always saying this so please excuse me if you feel I’m repeating myself but… By saving money on store-bought cleansers you can use this diy oil cleanser liberally knowing that it cost you next to nothing to make!
- This diy facial cleanser has a cloudy look about it, this is due to the emulsifier ingredient Polysorbate 80. which is an oil-in-water emulsifier, it foams a little and helps to remove any traces of the cleanser when you use your homemade toner.
- With zero water content, the shelf life on my natural oil cleanser recipes is around 12 months, more info on shelf life.
Neroli Oil Cleanser Recipe (Mature Skin)
I will show you how to make this diy facial cleanser using my Neroli recipe, but as long as you keep to similar volumes of carrier oil and use around 10% liquid emulsifier (I’m using Polysorbate 80, but you can also use others) you can vary this recipe to suit. I have some extra recipes below for other skin types but definitely feel free to experiment with this.
Ingredients:
- 50g Apricot Kernal Oil
- 25g Rice Bran Oil
- 15g Castor Oil
- 1g Vitamin E Oil
- 9g Polysorbate 80
- 10 Drops Neroli Essential Oil
- Bottle with disc cap
Method:
- This is simple, use your digital scale to measure the oils then just mix all ingredients together and pour in a clean bottle.
- I used a 4 oz (100 ml) bottle with a simple disc cap, these caps retail at around 9c each which is cheap. A good tip would be to buy extra caps when buying bottles as the bottles can often be reused if wash and sterilized, just use a new cap each time.
- The vitamin E is heavier than the rest of the oils as you can see in pic, so always give your finished oil a good shake before using just in case its separated a little.
