A gorgeous DIY conditioner for dry hair that’s created from scratch. It’s packed with fantastic ingredients to keep your hair well-conditioned and looking amazing!
One of the things I like most about this conditioner is the light, fluffy texture that has good slip-and-slide thanks to the dimethicone. Furthermore, I find my hair is easy to comb through after using, which is great as I’m prone to dryer brittle hair, which unfortunately comes with dying and aging. So the less drag, the better.
Introduction
We love using BTMS 50 emulsifying wax in a hair conditioner however, we are well aware that not everyone can get hold of it. So we have decided to make this DIY conditioner for dry hair with BTMS 25, which seems to be much more widely available.
Although BTMS 25 has slightly fewer conditioning benefits than its counterpart BTMS 50, it still makes for a terrific conditioner. And we have combined it with some fantastic hair-loving ingredients to really give it a boost. We have added some buttery goodness to give it a rich creamy thickness and some cetyl alcohol, Panthenol, and silk for total hair hydration.
This recipe is a go-to when my hair feels dry and tired. I owe that to the combination of ingredients I’ve chosen. We’ll come on to all of that soon but first, let’s take a first look at my recipe in full. Also, consider pairing this with a homemade shampoo for added benefit!

In-Depth Analysis
Ingredient Specification and Purpose
BTMS 25: Is very easy to work with emulsifying wax that produces a light yet creamy emulsion. It has superb moisturizing and conditioning benefits that help prevent moisture loss, whilst using heated tools such as hair dryers and straighteners by forming a protective barrier on the hair shafts. It’s the perfect e-wax for this diy conidertioner for dry hair.
Cetyl Alcohol: For anyone with dry hair cetyl alcohol is a must-have. To be honest dry hair can’t get enough of this stuff but I want to add some butter for richness and to mutch cetyl alcohol would make the conditioner too thick.
Mango Butter: Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, along with essential fatty acids mango butter has all the nutrients you will need to protect and strengthen the hair follicles.
Mango butter is also very beneficial to the scalp, reducing dryness and relieving itchiness.
Camelina Oil: Is similar to flaxseed oil in its properties however it is heat stable and has a much longer shelf life.
Camelina Oil has fantastic hair conditioning properties which it why its often found in hair oil treatments. It sinks in quickly softening the hair without leaving a sticky or greasy residue, leaving the hair smooth and shiny.
Panthenol Powder: We are adding pro-vitamin B5, (panthenol) to improve the hair’s moisture retention, elasticity, and flexibility. It also helps the hair feel softer and smoother.
Hydrolyzed Silk Protein: Anyone with dry damaged hair is going to love this ingredient as it can deeply penetrate the strands hydrating them from the inside out. It can reduce the appearance of split ends and make it easier to manage. Adding a small amount of silk protein will keep your hair hydrated and help prevent breakage until the next wash.
Dimethicone We wanted to add something that would give protection from heated tools such as hair dryers and straighteners. Dimethicone also gives the conditioner some slip and slide making combing easier and adding shine. It is not a natural ingredient but regarded as safe for humans.
Essential Oils: It is no secret that rosemary and peppermint are excellent for hair. They can help relieve an irritated scalp and promote healthy hair growth. While a DIY conditioner for dry hair doesn’t need to contain aromatic oils, it does add a touch of luxury to the finished product.
