How To Make Banana Hair Mask With Only 4 Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized bowl, give your banana a good mash-up with a fork.
    1 Banana
A banana is mashed with a fork in a mixing bowl
  • Add the honey, egg yolk, and olive oil to the banana.
1/2 tbsp Organic Honey, 1/2 tbsp Olive Oil, 1 Egg Yolk
Oil and an egg yolk is added to the mashed banana
  • If you have a stick blender, use this to mix all the ingredients. A stick blender does a great job of combining them into a lovely creamy consistency with no lumpy banana bits. If you don't have a stick blender you can use a jug blender or continue using a fork or spatula. The main thing here is to eliminate any lumps so that it's easy to rinse out of the hair.
The mixture is blended with a stick blender
  • Once everything is combined, it is ready, so go ahead and use it!
The mixture is spooned into a glass bowl to use

How To Use My Banana Hair Mask

  1. For best results, dampen the hair first.
  2. Apply the banana mask from roots to tips, making sure that all your hair is covered.
  3. Massage the banana mask into the scalp for added benefits.
  4. The banana mask can be messy, so use a shower cap or plastic wrap to cover your hair. This can also help the hair to absorb the nutrients.
  5. Allow the banana mask to penetrate the hair for around 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Rinse out the mask thoroughly with warm water.
  7. Shampoo twice and use a conditioner in your hair to remove any remaining scent or residue
  8. Dry and style as usual.

In-Depth Analysis For Banana Hair Mask

Formula Inspiration and Theming

Following on from the success in working with ingredients from my pantry, I came across a post that claimed bananas are good for hair. I was surprized, because I’d NEVER used fresh bananas in DIY haircare before.

It sparked my interest, to say the least. And after a little research, I found this had some truth to its claims.

I also decided that if you’re going to sit around with a banana in your hair for 30 minutes, why not add a few extras to make it worthwhile? My first thought was to add some protein. This was easy as egg yolk has everything we need! Then olive and honey for moisture.

The one thing I was worried about was the banana leaving a strong banana scent in my hair. Fortunately,  it didn’t however, I always shampoo my hair twice after using a pre-wash mask and I think the olive oil helped to give the mask a bit more slip-and-slide so it washed out easily.

All in all, I was pretty happy with the results, and my hair definitely felt silky after using it. My favorite thing about this banana hair mask is that I’ll always have the ingredients on hand. If my hair feels tired and I don’t feel like making something complicated, this is a go to recipe instead.

Ingredient Specification and Purpose

Banana

Bananas have natural oils and potassium that can hydrate the hair, making it softer and more manageable. Bananas also possess antimicrobial properties that can heal a flaky, dry scalp and alleviate dandruff symptoms.

They’re also packed full of wonderful antioxidants that can help protect the hair and scalp from oxidative stress.

Bananas are rich in silica (silicon dioxide) and are well known for their collagen-boosting properties, which can help stimulate new hair growth making hair look and feel thicker.

Honey

Honey is a fantastic humectant, which means it can draw moisture from the air and seal it within the hair shafts, leaving hair more moistened and flexible.  Honey also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help to maintain a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff and other scalp issues.

Egg yolk

Egg yolk is rich in nutritional content, including vitamins and biotin, which promote healthy scalp and hair growth, as well as proteins and fatty acids that strengthen and moisturize hair, reducing breakage and adding shine. Egg yolk also contains minerals like sulphur that support keratin and collagen production, essential for strong hair.

Olive oil

Olive oil is deeply hydrating for hair. It can penetrate the hair shaft much more easily than other oils, providing moisture where the hair needs it most. Overwashed hair can dry, so olive oil is the perfect treatment to restore its glow.

Substituting Ingredients

Honey

Honey,  maple syrup, or aloe vera gel would be a good substitute. If not you could leave this out.

Egg Yolk

You could try using yogurt or just add a little more olive oil instead.

Olive oil

Any oil that has potential hair benefits could be used here. Avocado and coconut oil would be great choices.

Final Thoughts

I hope this recipe has inspired you to give it a try. It really is super simple and also pretty cost effective too. If you have the time, I’d for sure give it a go.

Let me know how you find it in the comments below. I’m also happy to help troubleshoot any issues, but I think it’s unlikely you’ll have any trouble.

I’ll be back soon with another pantry recipe!
