20 Ways To Save Money on Your Beauty Routine That Will Not Sacrifice Quality

Beauty spending knows no limits. I know all about overspending on beauty products and not even getting the results I wanted. Luckily, that’s not the case for me anymore. So it’s time to tackle this issue once and for all.

We’ve researched and listed several ways to save money on your beauty routine. With these tips, you can take control of your routine and stay under budget.

Yes, really. You don’t have to spend big to get your ideal beauty routine. See the list below and learn how to achieve your beauty goals while keeping your budget intact.

1. Go for Multi-Purpose Beauty Products

One of the best ways for you to save money on your beauty regimen is to use multi-purpose products. For example, you can buy a lip and cheek tint, a product that does two jobs. And, the best part, you only have to purchase one product instead of two.

The same goes for your face cream and moisturizer. Why purchase two different items when you can get them in one item? By doing those things, you can save time, money, and space.

2. DIY Treatments

Another way you can save some bucks is to go the do-it-yourself (DIY) route. You can learn more about homemade items for your skincare and haircare needs. One of the best examples is to create your own face mask based on what your skin needs.

I prefer an oatmeal facial mask because it’s straightforward to make and makes my face incredibly soft. Just the way we like it (I do, at least). To make the oatmeal mask, mix ½ cup of hot (not boiling!) water and ⅓ cup of oatmeal. Let it sit for two to three minutes, and add two tablespoons of honey, two tablespoons of plain yogurt, and one egg white. Once done, apply it to your face and let it settle for 10 to 15 minutes before a warm water rinse.

3. Use Coupons and Join Rewards Programs

Take advantage of beauty retailers’ coupons, discounts, and loyalty programs. These are great ways to save on your beauty purchases without sacrificing quality. Coupons, for instance, can cover almost half the cost of your beauty items.

Statista shows that 177.9 million American adults redeemed digital coupons in 2022 alone. If you’re not a digital person, you can always find some coupons in newspapers and magazines, cut them, and exchange them for your beauty purchases.

4. Buy Big Sizes or Multipacks Products

Another way to save money is to buy big sizes or multipack products. Doing so helps you get more items at a lower price than individually or in a small pack.

For instance, I always use the same night cream. They’re rarely on sale, but when they are, I buy multiple because I know I’ll use them before they expire.

5. Opt for Drugstore Brands

You don’t always need beauty products in high-end stores or malls. There are skincare products without the high price tag. Try alternatives like Aveeno, Simple Skincare, Dove DermaSeries, and Cetaphil for your skincare routine.

In addition to their prices, these brands offer a wide range of options to match your needs. They also undergo several tests to ensure safety and effectiveness.

6. Shop During Off-Season Sales

Check out and buy at off-season sales to save some money. Beauty products are offered at significantly reduced prices at such sales.

The downside is that you may want to buy everything that catches your eye. Remember to save and only buy items you need most. That way, you can maximize sales and avoid unnecessary expenses.

7. Buy Cosmetics With a Purpose in Mind

When you buy cosmetics, make sure you actually need it. Because once you enter a beauty shop, it’s easy to get sucked into the newest lip balm with this new ingredient. And it lets you forget you already have three lip balms at home.

So, go in with a purpose and stick to what you need. For instance, if you only want to have an effective wrinkle cream, go for that. Or better yet, make your own wrinkle cream for a fraction of the price.

8. Avoid Impulse Buying

Try to avoid impulse buys where you can. I know they can’t be avoided 100% of the time, and that’s okay. But when the travel-size moisturizers on the counter may appeal to you, try to stay away.

Those items are there to tempt you to buy, they’re not at all tailored to your skin type or needs. You want to maintain the rest of your skincare routine and use items that suit your skincare goals.

9. DIY Manicures and Pedicures

Why go to a salon for your mani and pedi when you can opt for the DIY route? You only need a couple of tools: a nail cutter, a cuticle pusher, and your favorite nail polish.

DIY manicures and pedicures are great to help you save money. Plus, you can try out different colors and styles. If you’re new to this, you can watch free how-to videos on YouTube before you paint your nails.

10. Get a Low-Maintenance Hairstyle

Hair products are expensive, especially for long hair, where you use more product. That said, consider a low-maintenance hairstyle

For instance, you can choose chic short or mid-length hair to save on haircare products. However, if you want to keep your long hair and save at the same time, use only the haircare products that you really need.

11. Wait for Sales and Promotions

Do you use the same product? Or do you have a brand that you absolutely love? It’s great to try these out when they have a sale or promotion. Subscribe to your favorite companies’ newsletters or follow them on social media, and they will never fail to send you the latest deeds.

You may also look for online flash sales and selected item sales from beauty retailers. These can allow you to buy high-quality items to satisfy your beauty needs without breaking the bank.

12. Opt for Free Samples

Test products before you make full-size purchases. Some beauty products offer samples, that you can use to test to see if they feel good on your skin.

So, test out the sample first and see what it does with your skin. That way, you won’t waste your money on a product you may not like or have any allergic reactions in the process.

13. Skip Unnecessary Steps

We live in a world of excessive beauty routines that advertise the skin we want. Therefore, it’s easy to get caught up in multi-step skincare routines with a lot of different products.

For instance, there are plenty of 12-step skincare routines, like the popular Korean glass skin routines. They include an oil-based cleanser, a water-based cleanser, an exfoliant, a toner, and eight more products. But, not every type of skin needs every single step to be healthy. Instead of using all these products, you can focus on the steps that are most important for your skin.

14. Store Your Beauty Products Properly

It sounds so simple, but it can be hard to stick to it. But, it can make a huge difference when you store your beauty products properly. You make sure they stay efficient, don’t go bad, and your hubby won’t accidentally use that $50 eye cream on his entire face.

That said, seal the containers tightly after each use to avoid contamination through air and bacteria. As a result, you fully use your beauty products and don’t have to replace them early.

15. Use Less

Often with beauty products, you don’t need as much as you think you need. And they will last longer. For example, when you use moisturizer, put on an small amount on your fingers and spread it evenly on your face.

I know this is easier said than done since. It’s easy to use more than needed. I’m also heavy-handed when it comes to my beauty routine. However, if I really want to save, I always try to use only the needed amount or make my own skincare.

16. Embrace Minimalism

There are times when you want more makeup and skincare products on hand just to be ready for anything. A lip balm in your purse, one in your car, one in your bathroom. However, this can be a waste of money.

Try to keep it minimal. That means you should buy only the necessary items and use multi-purpose makeup and skincare items. For instance, use 2-in-1 products like lip balm that also give your lips a nice tint. This way, you don’t buy unnecessary items, save space, and ultimately save money.

17. DIY Haircuts and Color

Hair maintenance can be expensive, depending on where you go to do your hair. I’ve had friends spend $200 on a haircut. Well, not me! I’ve always cut my own hair and I can recommend you to consider DIY haircuts. It’s not as hard as you think, I swear. Opt for a simple haircut so it’s not too difficult to cut your hair yourself if you want that.

If you want to color your hair as well, DIY-ing it will save you a lot of money. However, going for a lighter color may be a little more complicated, so consulting a professional for that may be a good idea.

18. Exchange Products With Friends

Another way to save money is to exchange products you don’t use or like with your dear friends. To start, ask your friends if they have makeup or skincare items that they don’t use and decide if you’d like them.

If those items are what you need, talk to them about exchanging the items for your seldom-used beauty items. Be careful with products that have been open for a long time, ideally these products should be new or not opened yet.

19. Use Up What You Have

Are you someone who buys new beauty items? Even when the ones you have are not finished yet? Well, you’re not alone. I am very guilty of this. I bought the next shiny new thing and didn’t even think about the product that I already had.

That changed when I noticed a toiletry bag full of unused items in my drawer. I used them again until I finished them. Those items lasted several months and saved me so much money on beauty products.

20. Research and Compare Prices

When you use the same products over and over, compare your prices. I use the same night cream and I know exactly how much it costs. That helps me determine which retailer gets me the best price. I do love me some savings, especially when it’s on a product I use and love.

Check out monthly specials for your favorite brands. I can recommend it. If you’re a big user of a specific brand, sign up for their email list to stay updated on the latest prices. This will give you the latest information, which we all love!
