Among its many delights, aging brings fine lines, crow’s feet, and a general dullness to your once-pristine skin. As you start noticing these changes, it’s natural to look for ways to bring back that healthy glow!

Thankfully, I know a few small changes everyone can make to do exactly that. From eating more healthy fats to exfoliating and choosing the right moisturizer for your skin, you can get and keep your skin healthier as you age. This all works at any age; however, the earlier you start making these changes, the better, obviously.

1. Eat More Healthy Fats

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids help nourish my skin while bringing a soft, radiant glow to my complexion. This really does work; oily fish is one of 15 skincare superfoods I eat regularly. Not only does it help stave off dryness and keep your skin plump, but it will also keep your digestive system ticking along.

Avocados, flax seeds, and fish like salmon are great things to add to your diet for a lit-from-within glow as you age (plus, they’re delicious!).

2. Don’t Skip Exfoliating

While you don’t want to go overboard, gentle exfoliation is critical for removing dead skin and revealing a glowing complexion. Face scrub recipes can be made easily at home, BHAs, AHAs, lactic acid, and occasional chemical peels can all help.

Chemical exfoliants loosen the bonds between cells and cause the epidermis to slough off (i.e., shed dead surface cells) without damaging the skin. Done right, this can improve the skin’s texture and give it a brighter finish within weeks.

3. Get Your Double Cleanse On

You might have thought that breakouts were something you left behind in your teenage years. However, failing to cleanse your skin correctly can lead to unpleasant texture, roughness, and dullness.

An oil cleanser followed by a hydrating, water-based cleanser will break down everything from dirt and makeup to SPF. The result? Serious glow. Try to make these yourself so that you can guarantee that the quality ingredients work.

4. Experiment With Retinol

If you still need to hop on the retinol train, it’s time to treat your aging skin with one of the most wondrous ingredients out there. Retinol is a powerhouse product that increases cell production, unclogs pores, and gently exfoliates the skin.

This process reduces the appearance of fine lines and gives the skin a glass-like effect with unbeatable plumpness. If you’re ready to move on, step up and try retinoids like tretinoin, which are far more potent. A top-quality face serum using anti-aging ingredients is simple to make at home, and can be created to suit your unique skin!

5. Fill Your Diet With Antioxidant-Rich Food and Drink

While external lotions and potions are great for achieving glowing skin, nourishing the body from the inside out is an essential piece of the puzzle.

Drinks like green tea are great for reducing inflammation and contain vitamins B and E to boost collagen production for improved elasticity. It’s also worth loading your plate with antioxidant-rich foods like broccoli, spinach, and carrots to depuff the face.

6. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water is one of the easiest ways to get your glow on. Humidity levels and climate will change the amount you should consume each day, but eight to ten glasses is a good ballpark. You’ll flush out toxins and bring bounce to the skin in no time.

7. Avoid Showers That Are Too Hot

Hot showers can be seriously relaxing, but too much heat can damage the keratin cells on the epidermis. Regularly embracing steamy showers will strip the natural oils from your skin and make it more challenging for the cells to lock in moisture effectively.

8. Moisturize Well With Collagen-Boosting Ingredients

Another good idea is to choose moisturizers loaded with skin-loving ingredients. Topical vitamin C induces several key enzymes that increase collagen production, while niacinamide (or vitamin B3) is a brightening powerhouse.

To avoid overwhelming the skin, grab products suitable for your skin type. So, stick with gel moisturizers for oily skin and heavier creams if you’re drier. I make all of my own moisturizers, this helps me control the ingredients in each product to make sure they are the best for me. This way, I also get a top-quality product without the top-quality price tag!

9. Become a Sunscreen Worshipper

You might love tanning beds, but you’re unlikely to avoid photoaging if you refuse to apply sunscreen. Lightweight sunscreens with a factor rating of 30 and above will protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that cause photoaging.

Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen can also reduce blemishes, dark spots, and fine lines that cause dullness.

10. Whip out a Face Mask

Is there anything better than relaxing in the evening with a cup of herbal tea and a juicy facemask? Sheet masks are a great way to infuse moisture into the skin in 15 minutes flat.

Plus, you can pick up varieties boosted with niacinamide, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other moisturizing ingredients. Over time, masking up will reduce the appearance of fine lines and give you an unbeatable, hydrated glow.

11. Grab a Gua Sha

Facial massage is a one-stop shop for reducing tension and aiding lymphatic drainage in the face and neck. Buying a Gua Sha tool or face roller will help tighten the skin and depuff problem areas.

Along with a tighter jawline, you may also notice a post-massage glow that comes with increased circulation and blood flow to the face.

12. Use a Glow Primer or Face Base (And Keep Things Light)

Products like Elf’s Halo Glow and Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter are beauty staples for a reason. And it’s because they create a lit-from-within glow that’ll give you enough confidence to rock a “no-makeup” makeup look.

These products reflect light that hits the face without looking glittery, offering a diffused glow to the skin. If you’re wearing makeup, keep it light to avoid a patchy, dry appearance that can instantly age you.

13. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Exercise

Does your skin look suppler and brighter after a run? Well, it’s because exercise increases blood flow and delivers oxygen to the muscles and skin. This cycling of oxygen boosts collagen production and clears impurities for a long-term glow that’s tough to beat.

14. Limit Sugar and Alcohol

You might enjoy a glass of wine on a night out, but these sugary drinks can lead to significant inflammation in the body.

You might deal with puffiness and dry skin in the short term. But if you’re a regular partygoer, the sugar from alcohol sticks to and hardens collagen to give the skin a dull appearance that won’t budge.

15. Sleep!

Although it might feel like you need less sleep as you age, high-quality sleep lets the skin repair itself, destress, and rebuild collagen. Too little shuteye can increase cortisol levels, putting your body into an inflammatory state that can wreak havoc on the skin. So, don’t sacrifice that beauty sleep!
