I hope you’re well!
So the holidays have come and gone and the new year is well and truly upon us. Every January, I like to think of a fresh year as a kind of gift. We can wipe the slate clean and start again with renewed optimism and good intentions.
I’m sure many of you, like me, already have your new years resolutions in place. But for 2019, lets get ambitious and add one more to the list; to make even more of our own homemade things. I don’t know a single person that wouldn’t benefit from making their own homemade things to use or gift!
With big industry continuing to pump out consumer products with more and more ingredients that you and I can’t even pronounce, now is the time to take back control and live our lives as intended – toxin free! But if that’s not enough to convince you, think of all the money you’ll be saving!
I, as always, will do my best to be your guide. Whether you’re new to all this or a seasoned pro, SavvyHomemade will have something to get you started or inspire your creativity. Don’t believe me? Well, lets take a look at what we’ve been up to recently!
DIY Tutorial Videos!
We have four new videos posted in January, you can see them all here on our video page. Because I love candle making (and also because it’s so easy to get started), I thought I’d start here. My first video, How To Make a Pillar Candle, takes you through the steps of making the most basic of candle types, as well as how to scent and color them to your liking.
But I couldn’t stop there, we had to show you how to replicate those gorgeous yankee candles as well, with our How To Make Soy Jar Candles. These two crafts are a great starting point for anyone looking to pick up candle making for the first time.
I also took this opportunity to turn one of my most loved DIY tutorials into a video, How To Make Wrinkle Cream. This gorgeous night cream is the product of years of recipe tweaking, and can compete with some of the most expensive and sought after wrinkle creams on the market (except it’ll cost you a fraction of the price and won’t slowly poison you, either). You don’t want to miss out on this one!
Lastly, my son Daniel wanted to have another go at a craft we picked up last year, Making Your Own Bath Bombs. To say that these gorgeous balls of fizzing wonder are the perfect compliment to a post work, de-stress pamper session would be an understatement. But these luxury items are just do damn expensive to buy all the time! Do as I do and make your own, then every night can be a spa night!
Expect more videos in the near future. A lot more! I’ll be sharing these videos in the usual places, such as on our website, on our Facebook Video Page and of course on our YouTube Channel . If you do have a facebook or youtube account, I’d so be happy and grateful if you’d give us a like or if you could subscribe. It just helps me know I’m doing the right things. our and .

Amazing Milky Bath Bombs
While Daniel was filming the basic bath bomb tutorial, I thought I’d have another go as well and whipped up these beauties with a tweaked formula. I used whole milk powder this time as a substitute for the cornflour and some of the baking soda, along with a dollop of lovely shea butter.
The end product was just fabulous. My skin felt AH-MAY-ZING! So soft and supple, and my muscles felt so relaxed after a long soak in the tub. If you haven’t been using bath bombs, or your own luxury bath products before, I definitely recommend it. You will thank yourself for it, just trust me.
Bath Salts That Fizzz
If bath bombs aren’t your thing, why not try your hand at bath salts? They’re even easier and cheaper to make than their fizzing cousins, and have been around for much, much longer. These beautiful crystals will slowly melt in the bath, filling the tub with the gorgeous aroma of lemon and coconut.
But I had to put my own little spin on it, and added some citric acid so that they’ll fizz upon contact with your bath water. I don’t know what it is, but I just find that hissing, fizzle sound so relaxing. Oh, and they’re a lot of fun to throw in as well. But you can totally leave this out if you want to. When you make your own things, you’re the boss and you call the shots!
Last but not least, we have my new coasters craft. I actually made these right before the holidays as a last minute Christmas gift, and they turned out wonderfully.
I’ve made coasters before to jazz up my living room, but these novelty versions are personalised with your own family photos and holiday snaps. They’re pretty cheap to make, and are just so cute when you use the right photos. The perfect gift for just about anybody!
