Homemade Toothpaste

I read an article somewhere about all the harmful chemicals inside toothpaste. It can't be good for us if we're taught to spit it all out, right? So I went looking for a way to make homemade toothpaste.

I've been using my own toothpaste recipe for about 2 years now and my teeth are whiter, cleaner and I don't get bad cases of the fuzzy-teeth feeling after sleeping like I used to.

I also found a really gentle toothpaste recipe for my kids that's very easy on their teeth and gums and they don't have problems with cavities at all.

Here are my homemade toothpaste recipes

Adult Toothpaste Recipe

Ingredients:

- 6 teaspoons baking soda
- 4 teaspoons glycerin
- 1/3 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon peppermint oil
- 1/2 teaspoon arrowroot
- 15 drops peppermint or wintermint flavoring

Add all the ingredients into a container. Mix them well until they're blended completely. You should find they form a paste fairly easily. If the ingredients are too thick or too runny, you can add more baking soda to make it thicker or you can add a little more oil to make it smoother.

Store your toothpaste in a sealable container. Place a little on your brush and brush your teeth like usual. Don't be surprised if it doesn't foam up like commercial toothpaste. It feels a little weird at first, but once you've tried this toothpaste recipe, you'll be amazed by the fresh feeling in your mouth for hours afterwards and you'll have great smelling minty breath too.

Children's Toothpaste

My kids don't like the taste of peppermint, so I needed to find a different recipe to suit the kid's tastes. I tried two different recipes. One of my kids loved the orange flavored toothpaste, while the other loved the cinnamon recipe, so I've put them both here.

Ingredients:

- 6 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/3 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons glycerin
- 1/4 teaspoon arrowroot
- 1/2 teaspoon oil of cinnamon OR 1/2 teaspoon dried orange rind

Mix all the ingredients in a container until they form a paste. You can either add a little bit of cinnamon to taste or powdered orange rind.

To make the powdered orange rind, I put some grated orange rind into a food processor and ground it until it turned into a fine powder. Then I added it to my homemade toothpaste recipe to flavor it.

Maybe the kids could help make their own flavored toothpaste. This will hopefully encourage them to clean their teeth more thoroughly :-)
