Therapeutic Homemade Shampoo Recipe

The Ultimate Therapeutic Shampoo Bar must be the best homemade shampoo recipe I've ever used.

It not only has a delightful aroma that lasts all day long, but it really does revive flat, dull and thinning hair.

It's suitable for all the family including anyone who may be suffering with a itchy or flaky scalp.

It's full of essential oils aimed to stimulate the memory and lift tension, along with nourishing the scalp and adding a lovely shine to your hair.

This is also a great homemade shampoo bar to take with you when travelling, especially if you intend to fly. You can cut the amount you may need from one of the bars and pop it in with your hand luggage with out the worry of carrying liquids.

Ingredients For the Ultimate Therapeutic Shampoo Bar

  • 9 fl oz (270ml) Mineral water
  • 2 Chamomile teabags
  • 1 1/4 pints (700ml) Olive oil
  • 3 1/2 fl oz (90ml) Sweet almond oil
  • 2 oz (60g) Beeswax
  • 2 oz (55g) Creamed coconut
  • 4 oz (110g) Lye (caustic soda)
  • 4 teaspoons (20ml) Bergamot essential oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) Lavender essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Geranium essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Rosemary essential oil

Making The Ultimate Therapeutic Shampoo Bar

Before you begin making this homemade shampoo, take a moment to read the Make Homemade Soap Process. In this overview you will see photos and obtain a good feel for the basic soap making procedure (cold process).

The page importantly describes how to quicken the trace stage (thickening stage) using a stick blender.

Method

  1. Put the chamomile teabags into a bowl Boil the mineral water and pour it over them. Once cooled, strain, reserving the infusion.

  2. Make sure the room you are making the soap in is well ventilated. Oil a plastic mould and then line it with greaseproof paper.

  3. In a large stainless steel pan, melt the olive and sweet almond oils with the beeswax and coconut cream over a low heat. Stir continuously so that the cream does not catch the bottom of the pan and burn.

  4. Put on protective eyewear, mask, apron and long rubber gloves. Pour the chamomile infusion into a plastic bucket or jug. Slowly, add the lye, using a plastic spatula to stir until dissolved.

  5. Use two jam thermometers, one for the lye mix and one for the oil mix. Make sure you are wearing the protective clothing. When both mixtures equalise at 131 F (55 C) immediately pour the lye mix into the oils and stir well.

  6. Continue to stir until it has thickened enough, when a bit of the soap is drizzled over the top it leaves a line/ trace. Pour in the bergamot, lavender, geranium and rosemary essential oils and sir thoroughly.

  7. Pour the mixture into the mould that you prepared before. cover with cardboard, and leave in a warm, dry place for 24 hrs in order for it to set.

  8. Line a wooden board with greaseproof paper, put some protective gloves on and turn the soap out onto the board.

  9. Use a carving knife to cut the soap into bars or into your preferred shape. Put them into a tray lined with greaseproof paper and leave for four weeks in a warm dry place.

  10. Turn them occasionally.
