Homemade Salsa Recipes


A Mexican meal would not be complete without one of these traditional homemade salsa recipes.


These wonderful and simple homemade salsa is great for seasoning any traditional dish.


Homemade salsa recipes can be made in advance and you can vary the amount of garlic, chillies and spices according to taste, but make sure the home made salsa has quite a kick otherwise it will not be effective.

Homemade Salsa


Each of these homemade salsa recipes serves 4-6

Jalapeno Salsa

  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2-3 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 4-6 tablespoons of coarsely chopped pickled jalapeno chillies
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • Salt

Put the onion, garlic, chillies, lemon juice and cumin into a bowl and mix.

Season to taste with the salt, then cover and chill.

Salsa Cruda

  • 6-8 tomatoes
  • 100mls/31/2 fl oz of tomato juice
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
  • 1/2 to1 bunch of fresh coriander leaves coarsely chopped
  • 3-4 fresh green chillies such as jalapeno or serrano, de-seeded and finely chopped
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 3-4 spring onions, finely chopped
  • A pinch of salt
  • A pinch of sugar

For chunky homemade salsa recipes, mix all the ingredients together, cover and chill until required.

For a smoother salsa blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor, spoon into a bowl, then cover and chill until required.

Salsa Verde

I often make this hot Mexican salsa as a dip when we have friends over and it goes down a treat.

  • 450g/1 lb oz canned tomatillos drained
  • 1-2 fresh green chillies
  • 1 green bell pepper deseeded and chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 bunch of fresh coriander, finely chopped
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of ground cumin
  • Salt

Drain and chop the tomatillos, then de-seed and finely chop the chillies and the pepper.

Mix all ingredients together and season to taste. For a finer smoother salsa blend in a food processor and then chill.

Tropical fruit salsa

This tropical fruit and minty salsa looks and smells great and is perfect with food cooked on the barbecue.

  • 1/2 of a fresh green chilli deseeded and chopped
  • 1/2 to 1 red chilli chopped
  • 1/2 of a pineapple, peeled,cored and diced
  • 1 mango, peeled stoned and diced
  • 1/2 of a red onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh mint

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl season to taste and pop in the refrigerator to chill.
