I suffer from terribly cracked and chapped lips in winter and summer. I guess this is from all the dry air from the air conditioning or from the heating. Most of the commercial lip balms only seemed to work for a little while, so I was constantly applying it to my lips.
Then I stumbled onto several types of homemade lip balm recipes that work so much better. Besides, they're often cheaper to make and you can flavor them to suit your own tastes.
Here is one of the recipes I use to make my own homemade lip balm.
Chocolate Lip Gloss
This lip gloss recipe is excellent for keeping my lips moist and stops them cracking and it tastes great too. It also has a slight brown tinge that doubles as a nice tinted lip gloss.
Ingredients
- 1/4 teaspoon paraffin wax
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon Vaseline
- 1/4 teaspoon cocoa powder
Put the paraffin, coconut oil and Vaseline into a zip-loc bag and seal the top. Put the bag into a pot of boiling water and leave them until all the ingredients are melted. When it looks like the ingredients have melted, take the bag out and knead the bag with your fingers to blend all the oil and wax together properly.
Open the zip-loc bag and sprinkle a little cocoa powder into the wax mixture. Seal the bag and knead the bag between your fingers again. Keep doing this until you get the chocolatey taste that suits what you want.
When you've got a nice runny mixture of oil, wax and chocolate that tastes good to you and has a bit of a brown tint, cut the corner off the bag and pour the whole mixture into a lip gloss pot.
I let the recipe set overnight before using it and now I carry it with me everywhere. I don't get cracked lips and it always give my lips a little bit of color even when I'm not wearing lipstick. This is the best homemade lip balm recipe I've tried and it's so easy!
