Homemade Invitations - Unique and fun ideas

Unique and creative homemade invitations can save you a lot of money!

There are two things that you should consider when you make your own invitations.

First, the invitation should be appropriate for the event. Potential guest should know immediately upon receiving their invitation, what the party is for.

Are you making home made wedding invitations, Birthday Invitations, a homemade baby shower invitation etc?

Next, your invitations should include all pertinent information:

  • Guest of honor. Who is the party for?
  • Date
  • Time
  • Location
  • RSVP phone number and possible email address

Also, consider including a map for out of town guests, especially if the venue will be difficult to find. If the event is something the guest of honor has registered for include registry cards, often available for free from the retailer.

In the event of a baby shower, bridal shower, or potluck include special instructions if needed.

For example, please bring a package of diapers to get mommy started. The bride's lingerie size is... And, bring your favorite dish and copies of the recipe to share.

Making A Homemade Birthday Party Invitation

Kid's birthday parties are often themed after a favorite character or animal of the birthday child. Consider this easy way to carry the theme through to the invitations.

  1. Purchase cardstock and blank invitation envelopes at the local office supply store.

  2. If you have a dollar store or superstore in your area find stickers that fit your theme.

  3. Using a word processing program on the computer, set up a page in landscape format.

  4. Type the necessary information on the bottom half of the page and print only one to check positioning.

  5. Create a new blank document in you word program. Use a fun font to type a trivia questions regarding the party theme. (e.g. What does a brontosaurus eat?)

  6. Print the question on the outside of the homemade invitations. You may need to rotate the text so that when you print and fold the invite, it is right side up. Play around with your paper positioning and only print one invitation at a time until you have it right.

  7. Finally, have the birthday kid help you decorate the front of the cards with a sticker or two one each.

  8. Offer a prize for guests who have the answer to the trivia question when they arrive at the party.

Homemade Bridal Shower Invitation

  1. Purchase cardstock and blank invitation envelopes at the local office supply store.

  2. Using a word processing program on the computer, set up a page in landscape format.

  3. Type the necessary information on the bottom half of the page and print only one to check positioning.

  4. Once you are satisfied with the rest, print out the quantity you need and fold the homemade invitations.

  5. Use a glue stick to attach magazine cutouts of bridal gowns and wedding rings. Your bride-to-be probably has a huge stack of these laying around.

Homemade Baby Shower Invitation Ideas

Consider purchasing 8 ounce baby bottles in bulk and then stuffing them with invitations printed on stationary grade paper that is baby themed.

This paper is available at any office supply store. You can easily attach address labels and postage, or hand them out in person.

Also, include on the invitations a challenge for guests to bring their bottle back stuffed with unique baby items (diaper pins, rash ointment, shout wipes, or anything else creative). Offer a prize for the most creative idea!

If your mommy-to-be is comfortable enough with this, consider using the ultrasound pictures as a front of the invitation. Many doctor's offices now offer a 3-D ultra sound image on CD that is beautiful, you can upload it onto a photo invitation website and fill in the necessary info. They will send you the invites with envelopes, ready to go.

Just make sure you order them far enough in advance to account for processing and shipping time.
