Homemade Gift Basket Ideas

Looking For Some Homemade Gift Basket Ideas And Inspiration?

Most people, when you mention "homemade gifts" are going to think of food, or knitted and crocheted items.

While an afghan crocheted to match a sofa or chair is a great gift, as are mittens, scarves, and sweaters, not all of us have that type of talent, or the necessary time to go with it.

But there are hundreds of home made gift basket ideas you can do easily, quickly, and with minimal cash investments. And if you have the money to spend, it still is a wonderful touch to create a special package for the ones you love.

Remember to also spend some time browsing the rest of this site as we have many concepts that lend themselves nicely to gift baskets.

Below are some suggestions and videos to get you started...

Making Your Own Gift Basket

Homemade Gift Baskets

Home made gift baskets are fun to open and can be easily personalized. All you need is a large basket and a theme:

  • For an animal lover Fill a pet bed with toys, a new collar, a T-shirt with a photo of his pet on it, a calendar with pet pictures, a gift certificate to Petsmart, etc.

  • For an aging relative Fill the basket with a big mug, crackers and dried soup mixes, a book with a homemade book mark, packets of flavored coffees and hot chocolate.

  • A Spa Basket would be a nice gift for any woman... bath salts, a mud pack, body lotion, a scented candle, and a bottle of wine.

  • For your spouse - champagne, a hand written gift certificate for a romantic dinner and tickets to a show or sporting event.

  • An art basket for someone who loves to draw could include, paints, construction paper, artist pad or canvass, brushes, charcoals, pastel chalks, instructional books, a paint smock.

If you have children who are going off to college

There are wonderful homemade gift basket ideas that they will both need and enjoy. You can fill a laundry basket with shower supplies, packaged snack foods, a small tool kit, and a bulletin board.

Or make up a first aid box filled with bandaids, thermometer, antiseptics, ipacec, antihistamines, aspirin, gauze and tape.

A sewing basket with several thread colors, needles, pins, scissors, pin cushion, buttons, safety pins, a thimble, tape measure, etc. will set them up nicely.

If your kids get bored on the family trips

Give them a special homemade travel kit for their birthdays. A nice box, hard enough to use as a writing surface, and filled with paper, activity books, colored pencils, word puzzles, travel games and packaged snacks will entertain them for hours at a time.

You can easily make a homemade insect collection kit for your child

All you need is a long handled net, a jar with some holes poked in the lid, and a book with identifying pictures of insects. You might want to add a magnifying glass for identification of their catches.

Not all gifts cost money!

You can offer services, such as babysitting, doing laundry, mowing grass, grocery shopping... Make it special by designing a card with the "gift" printed on it and a picture that represents your promise. Or write a poem or a short story about something that you shared with the birthday girl.

All children love to make cookies

Why not make up a batch of sugar cookie dough, wrap it up with a couple of cookie cutters, some decorative sprinkles and a can of frosting, and let them make their own cookies for their birthday?

Does your mother or a friend love to cook and believe in starting from scratch?

Why not make her a small herb garden? It can be in a painted box, lined with plastic, and easily moved so that she could have it outside in the summer and move it to a windowsill in her kitchen for winter.

Find out what her favorite herbs are and plant them in the box. She will now be able to snip parsely, dill, chives, and rosemary as needed, and will think of you every time she does.
