Homemade Carpet Cleaner

Looking for a homemade carpet cleaner?

by Lucy (Aspen)
Over the years our carpets will probably receive a great deal of abuse. First we have the every day dust and dirt that is almost impossible to avoid. Next are the stains, spills and pet abuse that contribute to making a carpet look old and tired.

So how do we get our carpets looking clean and smelling nice again? Most of the problems above can be overcome with a carpet cleaner, and it doesn’t need to cost you a lot of money. You can quite easily make your own carpet cleaner with natural ingredients, and save a ton of money in the process.

I use a carpet cleaning machine on a regular basis in my home. Ive tried and tested many homemade carpet cleaner recipes over the years, and my favorite is simple white (distilled) vinegar, it’s both Eco friendly and inexpensive to use. Its tough on stains and pet odors, and yet suitable for any one suffering with allergies.

Just mix equal parts of white vinegar and hot water, then follow your manufactures carpet cleaning guide as usual. Don’t worry about the carpet smelling of vinegar, once it dries the vinegar smell will disappear.

Good to know

one of the worst problems from homemade carpet cleaners is the build up of residue left behind after cleaning. White distilled vinegar not only leaves the smallest amount of residue in the carpet but will also slow down the resoiling process.

Small spot carpet cleaner

Add enough white vinegar to a tablespoon of baking soda so as to make a thick paste. Now, using a small brush or toothbrush rub the paste well into the stain, then allow it to dry before vacuuming. Repeat if necessary ;-)

Simple spray carpet/rug cleaner

by Eric Carter (L A)

  • 3 oz of ammonia
  • 3 oz of distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of dish detergent
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • Water

Put all of the ingredient into a 16oz spray bottle then top up with water and shake well.

Spray the stained spot and leave for 2 or 3 minutes. Using a damp sponge gently rub over the stain. Now pat dry with a clean cloth or rag, when it’s dry the stain will be gone!

Home made carpet cleaner/freshener

The two main ingredients for a dry homemade carpet cleaner/deodorizer is baking soda and corn starch. I mix up a cup of each then add one of the ingredients bellow and sprinkle over my carpets. I then leave it on for a few hours or preferably overnight before vacuuming.

  • Add crushed bay leaves and crushed cloves
  • Potpourri Recipe here
  • Essential oils any combination but you will need to use about 10 drops.(rub the oil into the powder to disburse it before sprinkling.

This carpet deodorizer doesn’t just mask bad carpet odors, the baking powder absorbs them leaving just a clean fresh smelling carpet.
