Homemade Balti Chicken

This a lovely, spicy and very delicious homemade Indian food dish and best of all it's all made in just the one saucepan. For a healthy option, I often serve this homemade balti chicken with brown rice and substitute the vegetable oil for olive oil.

Homemade Balti Ingredients

Homemade Indian Food Dish
  • 3 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions (sliced)
  • 3 tomatoes (sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kalonji seeds
  • 4 black peppercorns
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon garlic puree
  • 1 teaspoon ginger puree
  • 1 lb 9 oz (700g) skinless, boneless chicken breasts or thighs (diced)
  • 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander (extra to garnish)
  • 2 fresh green chillies (deseeded and finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • salt

Method

  1. In a large, heavy based frying pan; heat the ghee.

  2. Add the onions to the pan and cook gently for about ten mins, whilst stirring.

  3. Next, add the tomatoes along with the kalonji seeds, peppercorns, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, chilli powder, garam masala, garlic puree and ginger puree.

  4. Season with salt and cook for five mins, stirring all of the time.

  5. Put the chicken into the pan for five mins whilst stirring. Pour in the yoghurt, stirring constantly. Cover and simmer for about ten mins, stirring regularly.

  6. Whilst stirring, add the chopped coriander, chillies and lime juice.

  7. Put it into a warm dish; garnish with chopped coriander and serve with rice.
