As with indigestion heartburn is quite often brought on by over eating or generally just eating too quickly, eating rich or spicy food can also result in heartburn along with drinking too much alcohol.
Try to relax while you eat, chew your food for longer and avoid the foods that cause you problems.
Stressful situations can really upset the stomach very often leading to a pretty bad bout of indigestion and heartburn, thankfully once the situation has been resolved you can quickly diminishes the symptoms by using one of the home remedies for heartburn below.
Other causes of heartburn can be brought on by being pregnant, overweight, smoking or taking pain killers.
If your symptoms last for a number of hours without any let up, especially if your chest pain is also felt in the arms, neck and jaw or if vomiting, sweating or shortness of breath occurs.
If you have frequent bouts of heartburn or indigestion it maybe a weak muscular valve around the gullet or a bacterial infection that's associated with a peptic ulcer, so get it checked out.
Agrimony or horsetail is recommended for indigestion, take as a herbal tea or tincture.
Make an herbal tea with a mix of meadowsweet which lowers acid production (meadowsweet can also be used as a tincture or as a tea on its own) comfrey to heal the burning, and chamomile to reduces stress and inflammation.
Massage is very good for indigestion type symptoms; it can really help the circulation in the Stomach area.
Use a gentle amount of pressure to massage one of these recommended oils on your abdomen, in a clockwise direction; bergamot, chamomile, fennel, Melissa, mandarin, peppermint essential oil or clove oil.
Do not do this if you have diverticulitis Crohn's disease, ulcers, cancer or any other serious inflammatory conditions.
Arsenicum album. is recommended for heartburn in the chest and throat; take 6c three times at 15 minute intervals. If necessary, repeat the series.
Carbo veg can help if you have flatulence as well as indigestion.
Lycopodium is also useful if you have cramping pains that make your stomach feel hard and bloated after eating foods which give you wind, such as bean onions and cabbage.
Drinking a glass of milk can ease the pain of heartburn.
Drinking soda water can be a great heartburn home remedy. Also, drinking sparkling water with your meal can prevent it.
Eating fresh pineapple (tinned is not as effective) after a meal can prevent heartburn.
Indigestion is caused by too much acid in the stomach, Yoghurt and rice helps to settle the acid. Overnight, leave a handful of cooked rice in a glass of cold water. Strain the next morning and mix with a carton of plain (preferably live-bio) yoghurt; eat for breakfast.
