Native to the cold environments of northern Europe and Asia, Angelica is a herb that can survive as far north as Iceland and Lapland.
Despite this, there is evidence to suggest an African origin. Angelica is a prominent flavouring in the Chartreuse and Benedictine liqueur, and has been adopted for a number of alcoholic beverages such as gin, and a wide range of perfumes.
It is also perhaps most famous for its use in cake decoration and flavouring, vastly popular during the 1980's and early 90's.
Angelica essential oil has numerous properties. It is a popular choice for aromatherapy, and is used to treat ailments of the respertory system including coughs and chest infections. However, it can also relieve the strain of headaches, migraines, anxiety, stress tension and fatigue.
It also has a number of digestive aiding properties and commonly used to treat indigestion, flatulence and water retention.
It is a popular choice for those searching for a good detox, and can be used as part of an effective routine due to its ability to speed the passing of toxins from the body.
The application of Angelica essential oil is varied, but it is advised to use it in three ways.
Utilising the vapour in a burner will be most effective for treating respiratory ailments, whereas blending in a carrier and using it as massage oil, or putting a few drops in the bath tub are both great ways for easing tension headaches, migraines, stress and to promote detoxification.
Lastly, it can be blended into a cream or lotion, which when applied to the skin can help the inherent production of estrogen (if you are female), promote good general health and a balanced nervous system. In this form, Angelica cream or lotion can help bring out the warm glow of radiance in people of all ages.
Alternatively, its beautiful light scent is suitable for use as a top or middle note in perfumes and fragrances.
