Make Your Own Homemade Dog Food

Home made dog food is a very real option

If you're a dog lover or owner, you know how expensive it can be to feed our furry friends.

However, a dog's natural diet can be replaced with many of the items on our regular shopping list to save a few of your hard-earned dollars.

When you make your own dog food you must keep in mind that there are certain things that should never be fed to your dog. This includes chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and bones of any kind. Bones can easily become lodged in the digestive tract; in the wild, dogs have the advantage of also eating fur and hides that can help the bones along. You must always ensure your homemade dog food never contains any bones.

Dogs feeding

Also remember that a dog's diet must gradually be changed to prevent digestive upset. When feeding your dog a different type of food, simply mix an increasing ratio of it with his normal dog food over several days to acclimate him to the new option.

Always feed your dog a multivitamin or supplement to compliment any diet, including homemade dog food. Nutritional requirements may vary among dogs with different conditions, so consult your veterinarian.

A huge advantage to making your own dog food is that you know exactly what they're eating. Remember the salmonella scare in the mass-produced brands not long ago? Feeding your dog homemade items can help eliminate the possibility of this ever happening.

A great doggie recipe

Serve this at room temperature. Include ground beef, boiled eggs, cooked plain oatmeal, green beans, carrots and cottage cheese. The meat, eggs and oatmeal should be cooked, and all ingredients are mixed together. You can simply store this mixture in the fridge up to three days for gradual feeding.

When feeding homemade dog food, you may find that your dog prefers some types of protein over others. Try mixing cooked turkey or chicken, brown rice, mixed veggies and chicken broth for a great doggie casserole. Fish may also be substituted for the chicken and broth in this recipe for a different variety for your furry friend.

Also consider using 100% organic ingredients in your dog's food. Some research has shown that the average dog life span can be increased to as much as 20 to 30 years if he is fed an organic diet from birth.
